从2015年开始，爆发式发展所带来的副作用开始显现，产品本身的净化效用、质量问题以及虚假宣传和价格虚高问题乱象丛生。尽管2016年3月1日新版《空气净化器》国家标准发布实施，但行业乱象依旧存在，部分产品质量堪忧。
2017年1月1日，首部空气净化器中国环境标志标准正式实施。上海交通大学电气工程系教授吴吉祥称，空气净化器中国环境标志标准对于空气净化的性能基本没有超出《空气净化器》新国标的规定，但是对企业的环保要求更高。
